Homerun Jersey Framing! A Behind-the-Scenes Look at Framing Jerseys

Jerseys represent American sports in all their glory.  Fame, finesse, legacy, community, these are just a few of the multitude of significances behind a jersey, its logo, its number, and often its signature.  Jerseys speak to American masses in such a way that restaurants, bars, and other public establishments rush to adorn their walls with these framed totems.  Naturally, individuals who own a signed jersey want to display it prominently for all their friends and acquaintances to see.

We receive questions regularly about framing jerseys.  The two most common questions:  Do you frame jerseys?  How much does it cost?  Yes, we frame jerseys- lots of jerseys!  Baseball, football, basketball, pro, amateur, new, and vintage.  You name it, we have framed it!  As for cost… there is no way to set a fixed price on any custom framing, including jerseys.  The cost reflects finished size and the client’s choice of materials.  Prices often begin at $400 and increase with size, complexity, and choice of materials.  So what goes into properly framing a jersey?  Below we have broken out the steps to include the basic “jersey only” project and “jersey plus extras”.

JERSEY ONLY  One of the most time-consuming steps is fastening the jersey to the back wall.  The jersey must be carefully arranged to display the name, number, signature, and/or logo.  We work with the client to determine the ideal arrangement.  Once an arrangement has been determined, the finished size of the shadow box can be determined.  We take a photo to use as a reference.  Our framers will match the photo and painstakingly attach the jersey to the back wall using needle and cotton thread and fasteners.  Both methods are entirely reversible.  Because the jersey “hangs” within a shadow box, side walls must be constructed.  These walls can replicate the back wall or can be made in a different color to stand out.  The materials used for the sidewalls and back wall are conservation grade to reduce color fade, spotting, and other deterioration that occurs with time and exposure to sunlight.  We use conservation glazing (glass) to further protect your investment. Scroll through the photos below to see our staff aranging the jersey, fastening the jersey, and building the side walls.

JERSEY PLUS EXTRAS  Often the client would like something extra- for example to include the ticket stubs from the game, a program, or a sportscard.  Including such items affects the placement of the jersey, the finished size, and the number of matboards used.  In order to include these items two matboards are stacked with openings in the top one to display the items.  An engraved brass plate can be incorporated to display a date or any other information.  We have built shadow boxes that enclose baseballs, golf balls, bats, and other sporting equipment.  The possibilities are endless!

When Grant’s Frames frames a jersey, our team spends between 8 and 10 hours to complete the project.  All the time and effort results in a beautifully crafted display piece that will withstand the test of time.  Browse through our Pinterest board “Custom Framed Sports Jerseys & Memorabilia” and our Sports Jersey page on our website, located under the Custom Framing tab.
